Hotel Hariklia selections

All suggestions are pinned in purple colour on the google maps below.

To easily find places on the map look at the "legend" on your left hand side, there is a list with all the locations. Here are a few selections, much more follows on the maps.

Agia Galini (map 1) - wider area (map 2)

For a good breakfast you can go to 'Plateia'. Hotel Hariklia guests get a 10% discount, so let them know that you are staying with us. Directions: take the stairs down to the village all the way down to the main road. You will see 'Plateia' on your left. Another nice place for breakfast is called 'Petrino'. A charming little place that you should try either for a delicious breakfast or for a beer in the evening. Directions: Again, take the stairs down to the village and turn right when you get to the main street. You walk up the street until you see the church and then you turn right.

ONAR (for local food & fish), by the harbour - good food, great service, nice harbour view.

KOSTAS (for fish), by the beach, located before the bridge.

MADAME HORTENSE, by the harbour - for a romantic dinner with beautiful view over the harbour

KALAMI, by the beach - Stylish Food/Cocktail Bar with great relaxing music.

Tip: In Agios Georgios beach (only a 10min drive from Agia Galini) is the great little taverna of 'Giorgos & Maria'. There is a trail to the beach if you like walking (around 40min - look at map 1)

The taverna is all the way down by the beach. Good food and great atmosphere. Definitely a place worth a visit.

Directions to the beach: As you leave Agia Galini you will see a sign pointing to 'Melambes' village.

Turn left towards Melambes village and turn left again when you see the next road sign which says 'Nikos rooms'.

"Kafeneio" is another word for cafe, but not any cafe. Every Greek village has it's own traditional old fashioned 'kafeneion'. A place where the elderly (nowadays also young) locals meet up to have their greek coffee in the morning and discuss significant and insignificant matters that have taken place. In the evening they gather up again, drinking their favourite 'tsikoudia' with small 'mezedes' (appetisers) and in a more cheerful note, analyze politics and philosophise life.

Nonta's kafeneion is a typical Cretan kafeneion, with great "mezedes" made by Adamantia, the heart of the place. Don't forget to give her our greetings.

You will find Nonta's place down by the village, pass the bus stop and further up the street on your right hand side, a place covered in green leaves.

For a special souvenir or gift from Agia Galini, visit Nikos Haritakis hand blown glass workshop.

You will be impressed by the beautiful glass blown creations. His workshop is a minute away from Agia Galini, taking the road to Rethymnon/Spili it is located right on top of a gas station on your left hand side. For directions and photos of his work open in map1.

The perfect escape when 'melting' away from heat in Agia Galini. The village of Melambes up by the mountain, has a beautiful climate and is only a 20 min drive from here. An authentic Cretan traditional village, intact by tourism. You can sit by 'Platanos' kafeneion for a coffee or snack under the shade of the beautiful 'platanos' (Plane tree) and refresh your glass with water straight from the mountains! Say hello to Aglaia, the owner of 'Platanos' cafe. The location is pinned on map2.

If you happen to visit the charming little town of Spili, noted for its cool mountain water which gushes from the Venetian lion head fountains, don't miss out the chance to have a great Cretan meal at a unique little taverna called 'Sideradiko' - look at map2. Beautiful atmosphere by the garden yard with delicious food. Nikos uses his own vegetables and meat for all his dishes.

What a treat! His taverna is located right at the entrance of Spili as you leave Agia Galini.

Spili is a haven of shady trees and flowers. Stroll around the small house alleys which give a beautiful feeling of village life. A perfect place for a half-day trip, and much cooler than anywhere for miles around!

Have a great Holiday!
